About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks shortly afterward. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. The Thule 987XT 6-Ski Adapter is designed to extend the functionality of your existing Thule hitch mount bike rack into the world of snowsports, providing both a convenient way to transport skis and snowboards to the slopes and save you money in the process by utilizing existing hardware. This adapter attaches onto the arms of a wide variety of hitch mount carriers and spare tire carriers, creating a two-sided vertical platform at the rear of your vehicle that allows for easy access to multiple pairs of skis or snowboards of all sizes and thickness. To secure skis and boards the Thule 987XT 6-Ski adapter uses a combination of a lower stationary rack pad that items are slid snugly into and a simple swing arm/knob upper mechanism that is easy to use via its ergonomic design. Each of these knobs also contain One-Key locks to lock skis/snowboards to the carrier. Easy Installation

Because the Thule 987XT 6-Ski adapter utilizes your existing hitch rack and assembles using virtually no tools, installation or removal can be done easily in only minutes. To install first rotate any cradles attached to your hitch mount rack's carrier arms to a flat position. Next slip the provided C-clamps over each of the carrier arms, rest the 987XT unit over the bike arms as indicated in the directions and secure it to the C-clamps using the included hardware and hex wrench. Finally attach the back of the Thule 987XT 6-Ski adapter to the upright assembly of your hitch rack using the U-bolt, spacers and ergonomic knobs provided. (Additional instructions are available for use with Rac 'N' Loc hitch carrier models.)

Designed with compatibility in mind, the Helium 2-Bike Hitch Carrier works with either 1¼ inch, or 2 inch hitch receivers by means of an included adapter. It is also incredibly strong, stable and full featured, as seen in its varied standard components, including: top-of-the-line T3 cradles set along the carrier arms for holding bikes in place for maximum frame protection and stability, patented No-Sway Cage technology that, working together with the cradles, dramatically reduces the chance of bike-to-bike and/or bike-to-vehicle contact that could result in scratches, an integrated locking cable that secures bikes to the carrier and lock functionality that can be installed in the ergonomic lock knob that secures the hitch to the hitch receiver.

In addition, by way of its easy-to-use Hitch Switch lever, the Helium 2-Bike Hitch Carrier has the ability to fold its carrier arms down at the push of a button when not in use and even tilt the carrier away from vehicle allowing for trunk, hatch or tailgate access (bikes must be removed first).
