About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family’s bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick’s son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Enter the Inno Aero Light four-bike hitch carrier, which makes accessing your trunk a breeze. The Aero Light is equipped with a foot-pedal release that tilts your loaded bike rack rearward.

The Aero Light hitch carrier holds up to 4 bikes at once.
As the rack goes back, your trunk is revealed, so you can easily fiddle with your luggage or find Cosmo's water dish at a moment's notice. Once you've arrived at your destination and removed your bikes, the rack's arms fold down via the one-touch release system and store conveniently out of the way. It's the perfect bike rack for frequent travelers who anticipate having to open the trunk at least once before reaching the campsite or vacation cabin.

The Aero Light carrier--which holds up to four bikes at once--is made of lightweight aluminum for better fuel economy, and includes both 1-1/4- and 2-inch receivers for easy installation. The rack is also gentle on your bikes, with soft-touch rubber cradles and reaching straps to protect the frames from scratches, along with anti-sway cradles for added stability on the road. Thule 9031 Vertex Swing Away 4 Bike Hitch Rack

Thule 9031 Vertex Swing Away 4 Bike Hitch Rack Review

Thule 9031 Vertex Swing Away 4 Bike Hitch Rack Feature

  • Hitch carrier for transporting up to four bikes - compatible with 2" hitch receivers
  • Swing-away design allows a fully loaded hitch rack to swing away from the vehicle for rear of vehicle access
  • Improved hitch switch folds arms down when not in use, and tilts an unloaded carrier away from hatchbacks
  • Arched mast and bike arm design for easier bike loading and carrying performance and increased mast height for improved ground clearance
  • Thule Hold Fast cradles cushion bike and provide maximum bike security and anti-sway cages prevent bike-to-bike and bike-to-vehicle contact

The Thule Vertex 9031 4-bike swing away bike rack is a hitch mount bike carrier that provides ultimate convenience as it transports up to four bicycles securely at the rear of vehicles, while allowing for full rear access to rear doors by either swinging away to the side, or leaning the unit back. Additional features include: an arc design for easier bike loading and carrying performance, increased mast height, Thule Hold Fast cradles and anti-sway cages, the ability to fold arms down flat, bike and rack security from theft with locks (sold separately), and an integrated carrying handle.

Four-bike Carrying Capacity, and Swing Away Access to Your Hatchback

The Thule Vertex 9031 swing away 4-bike hitch rack carrier is designed for frequent cyclists and/or families that want the stability, and functionality of a hitch receiver carrier that does not interfere with use of hatchbacks. The Vertex 9031 swing away is compatible with 2" hitch receivers and has a 4-bike carrying capacity managed by its two arched bike support arms. The naturally supportive arch design of the bike arms allows for easier bike loading and carrying performance. Thule Hold Fast cradles are installed on the arms. They feature a soft, single material cradle with a groove design that accommodates bike cables, cushions bikes and secures them during transport. In addition, straps used in cradles are 25% strong than current Thule T3 straps. To provide maximized bike stability, bike arms also feature anti-sway cages. Anti-sway cages are rigid rubberized bike rack components that attach to the lower edge of the bike arm, hanging below the bike cradle (one for each bike). As the top tube of bike frames rest on the carrier arms, the anti-sway cages attach to the vertical tube section of bike frames with included straps. This holds bikes firmly in place without the need of a heavy wheel tray sometimes incorporated into hitch mount carriers. Bikes can be locked to the carrier with a cable lock (sold separately), and the carrier can be locked to a vehicle hitch receiver using a hitch receiver lock (sold separately).

Always Available Access to the Rear of Vehicles

The Vertex 9031 ensures access to rear hatchbacks is always available through swing away arm and leaning functionality. Swing away arm functionality is provided by a connection between the two segments of the unit's horizontal base, which in turn connect to the vehicle's hitch receiver. When the Vertex 9031 is in the standard use position these two segments are automatically held together by a spring loaded joint, along with a lower locking handle and upper lockup pin combination that snap closed on contact. When the release pin is lifted up, a gentle pull of the carrier can separate the two segments, and the upright section swings smoothly to the passenger side of the vehicle, allowing hatchbacks to be opened without removing the carrier. The carrier can be held in this position for as long as necessary with the hold-open pin inserted. This ease of movement of the swing arm is the same whether the carrier is empty or loaded. To return the swing arm to its standard position simply remove the hold-open pin. The swing arm will move back into position and lock into place. The upright mast of the Vertex 9031 can also lean to the rear of the vehicle with a pull of the improved hitch switch to provide access to the rear of vehicles while the carrier is empty but attached. An added usability feature of the Vertex 9031 is the ability of its bike arms to fold down into a vertical position when not loaded. This minimizes the possibility of driving and parking issues when the empty carrier is left on a vehicle.

Installation and Use

The Echelon comes nearly fully assembled, requiring only the included hex wrench and your own two hands to easily assemble in little time. Installation begins with the combined Echelon head assembly / wheel tray which provide the base for securing a bike's forks (head assembly) and a stable mounting platform for you back tire (wheel tray). Following some simple preassembly to these components, users have just to attach the head section and wheel tray to their rack's load bar with the hex wrench and included knobs as well as the included mounting plates and other hardware that allows for square or rounded cross bars. The Echelon is now ready for your bike.

To load your bike remove the front wheel and stow it in your vehicle. Next, open the head assembly cover/clamp exposing the pressure dial at the tip of the assembly. Loosening this dial creates initial space along the skewer running through the head assembly that your front fork's dropouts connect to. Now, place your bike's fork dropouts onto the skewer ends evenly on both sides. Adjust the pressure dial to ensure a firm but not overly tight hold on your dropouts, then close the cover/clamp partially. Correct clamping pressure occurs automatically when half way down the cover/clamp's arc you feel resistance. If you feel this, everything should be aligned correctly and you can fully close the cover/clamp. If not, repeat for the best results. At this point Echelon owners who have opted for a One-Key lock, sold separately and installed into the head assembly, can lock their bike to the carrier and the carrier to the rack simultaneously. A ratcheting wheel strap is provided to secure the rear wheel to the wheel tray and includes an adapter for use with road bike wheels. To remove your bike simply remove the wheel strap you installed, unlock the lock on the head assembly (if installed), lift the cover/clamp and remove your bike.

Key Features

  • The Equalized Twin Cam self-adjusting clamp automatically adjusts to fit a variety of fork dropout thicknesses for a secure hold.
  • Versatile design fits most disc brake and suspension combinations with standard 9mm axles.
  • Precise ergonomic pressure dial optimizes force on dropouts increasing hold, and eliminating damage to fork.
